Heart Lake and Rogers Pass
I have frequently visited East Portal for backcountry skiing, but it has been several years since I explored the James Peak Wilderness in the summer. The wildflowers continue to extend across the alpine slopes that were covered in snow just a few weeks ago. Our initial goal was to summit James Peak, but we were both under time constraints. We still managed to reach Rogers Pass and enjoy a lofty view of Heart Lake from the Continental Divide. The highlight for me was running through a field of columbines.
