King Lake and Devil's Thumb Lake Loop
One of my favorite loops in the Indian Peaks is connecting King Lake and Devil’s Thumb Lake via the High Lonesome Trail. We chose to run the loop in the clockwise direction, ascending through trees from the Hessie Trailhead and reaching a partially ice filled lake. Despite it being July, we still encountered backcountry skiers searching for last lines. The route itself only had a minor amount of snow across the trail on descending down to Devil’s Thumb Lake. While we could have traversed around it, a little glissade cooled us off.
It has also been fun having another runner bring a bulky and heavy camera. While frequent stops to take pictures eventually adds up to a longer day, enjoying the alpine beauty is half the fun on these long trail runs.
