Central Utah

Few places have night skies as dark as central Utah. I spent a week exploring canyons, washes, and overlooks. Compared to popularity of Moab, it was refreshing to truly feel in the middle of nowhere.

Spending a night in a slot canyon is a surreal experience, with steep canyon walls encroaching your view of the night sky and triggering minor claustrophobia. The reward for this self-imposed confinement is the mystical dance of moonlight, where it playfully highlights one rock feature before quickly shifting to the next. The suspension of reality came to a literal crashing end when we heard a rockfall at the opposite end. A fresh layer of dust and debris spread across the canyon floor, and our gear, as we had chosen that spot for a nap earlier in the night. Sensing that we had overstayed our welcome, we decided it was the right time to leave!
